Health information management and clinical coding

Health Information Management (HIM) plays a critical role in managing health information systems for patient data. These systems support state and commonwealth data reporting, quality and safety reporting, health service planning, clinical research, and hospital funding models. The data required to support these systems is abstracted from patient care processes by clinical coding professionals.

The Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) provides further information, including professional competencies and standards for HIMs and clinical coders.
