2022–2023 Annual Report

The first annual report from the independent Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board (the Review Board) covers the first 6 months of voluntary assisted dying activity in Queensland.

It details:

• activity since the commencement of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2021 on 1 January 2023 to 30 June 2023
• implementation activities to prepare for the commencement of the Act
• the Review Board’s reflections drawn from case reviews and feedback from families of those who accessed voluntary assisted dying and authorised voluntary assisted dying practitioners. (The report contains personal insights from people involved in voluntary assisted dying—these quotes have been de-identified to protect the privacy of individuals.)

The report shows that from 1 January to 30 June 2023:

• 591 people commenced the process
• 562 people were assessed as eligible
• 338 people were supplied with a voluntary assisted dying substance
• 245 people died from administration of a voluntary assisted dying substance.

The report provides details about who is accessing voluntary assisted dying:

• people were aged between 26–95 and the median age was 73
• 56% of people were male
• 49% of people lived in regional, rural or remote parts of the state
• 78% of people had a cancer diagnosis.
