Clinical education

Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme provides regular education for prescribers, clients and carers. Students studying to become a health professional in any MASS designated prescriber category are also welcome to participate.

What education is available?

Most education is provided in a webinar format and these are free to attend. Workshops are also available; with a registration fee to attend.

To register for a webinar or workshop, please use the links on the PDF Education Calendar to book into events using an online bookings system. After making a booking for a webinar, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to enter the room and the calendar appointment attached. Our PDF Education Calendar details how to download The Teams app and participate in webinars using Microsoft Teams.

MASS Education Calendar

  • Gather together a team of learners. MASS will send a selection of pressure cushions on short-term loan to your workplace, and work through self-paced online learning with interactive support from MASS staff. There is currently a waitlist, so please contact us if you would like to complete this sooner using an alternate model (e.g., inservice) or our face-to-face workshop (below) is available in September and November.

  • Complementing our existing pressure cushion program, our pressure mapping program allows you to develop hands-on skills in using pressure mapping technology and interpreting outputs to guide pressure cushion selection and postural interventions. Gather together a team of learners. MASS will send a pressure mapping kit on short-term loan to your workplace. Work through self-paced online learning with interactive support from MASS staff.

  • The project runs until mid-2025. This webinar will provide information regarding the eligibility of clients in the four target groups:  Refugee and Disability, Spinal Cord Injury and Palliative Care. It will provide an overview of the Hospital 2 Discharge AT program.

  • Enhance your understanding on why an amputee may or may not be appropriate for a prosthesis and what personal characteristics may determine optimal use of the device. Considerations for patient goals prior to the clinical assessment will also be discussed

  • Gain a strong understanding of continence products on the current MASS SOA in a presentation by Shane Bleddyn (MASS Clinical Advisor – Continence) before viewing products at the trade show the next day. Leanne Morton (CNC, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital) will present ‘An overview of catheters’ and Tricia Lee Wairau (Nursing Continence Specialist, Blue Care) will present ‘Managing male urinary incontinence with sheaths’. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage in a hands-on experience in differentiating catheters and measuring for/applying sheaths.

  • Review elements of an assessment for a MSC in relation to your client’s functional needs, their environment, their posture and skin integrity. Engage in a hands-on experience to explore the different features of a range of these assistive products.

  • Enjoy a hands-on experience with a range of mobility aids, daily living aids, continence aids and prosthetics, exhibited by over 30 companies. Engage with suppliers and network with clinicians and consumers. Come along to our short education sessions scheduled throughout the day.

  • Find out about the guidelines, subsidy funding levels and SOA products at MASS.  Refresh your knowledge base on the different features of wheeled walking aids and how some hidden anomalies may cause issues for your clients. Our guest presenter, Jim Shen, a product design engineer, will also share his insights into the design and functionality of rollators and provide information on his current research study.

  • Appreciate more fully how to apply funding levels to mobility/daily living aids applications and what changes have been made to MASS-eApply. Review the considerations for trialing the most suitable mobility and daily living aids to ensure they will be appropriate for long term use at home, particularly when discharging from hospital.

  • Keep up to date with MASS guidelines and subsidy funding levels for hoists and patient transfer platforms and become acquainted with these new SOA products. Including a focus on patient sling assessments, learn more on considerations and contraindications for prescribing different devices and compatibility with the home environment.
