Walawaani Conference

The Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education presents Walawaani Conference 2024! Walawaani means ‘we hope you have a safe journey home’ in Dhurga language.

Gathering palliative and end of life care leaders and amplifying First Nations voices and program initiatives, Walawaani conference aims to deliver a holistic sharing of knowledges and wisdom to support the returning to Spirit journey for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities.

The Walawaani Conference is aimed at both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous professionals across any discipline or industry that is supporting the care, advocacy, education or policy of First Nations palliative care.  The Walawaani Conference will feature presentations on various palliative and end of life care topics with speakers from all states and territories. CPCRE’s previous similar conference, titled ‘Dying to Yarn’ was held in 2019 and attracted delegates from across the country.  With an increasing focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander palliative and end of life care, CPCRE anticipates an even larger number for this gathering.

The 2024 Walawaani Conference will showcase a diverse range of presenters from across Australia.  The program includes presentations on a variety of subjects, breakout Learning Circles on Torres Strait Islander Palliative Care and Jargums (Paediatric) Palliative Care, and a panel discussion led by First Nations palliative and health care leaders.

The conference program is still in development with identified themes thus far including Traditional Healing and Bush Medicines, Intersectionality in Palliative Care and Returning to Country initiatives. Conference exhibitors will also provide valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, networking and yarning.

As part of our commitment to amplifying First Nations voices and showcasing grassroots program initiatives, we are seeking abstract submissions from community and health leaders who are passionate about supporting the returning to Spirit for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
