Deafness and mental health education and training
The Deafness and Mental Health Statewide Consultation and Liaison Service provides a variety of online training modules, in-services and face-to-face workshops for health professionals.
The topics provide information on:
- understanding the culture of Deaf people
- language and assessment issues
- hearing loss and the implications for mental health
- how to book interpreters and why it is important to use them.

Online training modules are free for Queensland Health staff and external health professionals via iLearn.

Modules 1 and 2 are prerequisites for the Advanced Clinical Workshop.
Advanced Clinical Workshop
The full day online Advanced Clinical Workshop is for clinicians in Queensland Health, non-government organisations (NGOs) or private clinicians working in the mental health space. It provides knowledge, skills and cultural awareness when working with deaf people and their families. The workshop cost is $99.
Therapy programs and counselling
The Deafness and Mental Health Statewide Consultation and Liaison Service offers brief therapy and counselling that is culturally and linguistically appropriate. The team works with other health professionals, including psychologists and counsellors, to provide services that meet the needs of Deaf and hard of hearing people.
