Acquired Brain Injury Transitional Rehabilitation Service (ABI TRS)
The Acquired Brain Injury Transitional Rehabilitation Service (ABI TRS) is a specialist community-based rehabilitation service for people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), their families and networks.
Our aim is to assist people with ABI in Queensland to improve their quality of life, focusing on increased independence and maximising community integration.
The ABI TRS reaches for excellence, innovation and leadership in specialist ABI transitional rehabilitation. Services are delivered using the ABI TRS Model of Care (PDF 979 kB). Our primary objectives are to:
- ensure excellence and equity in rehabilitation
- deliver high-value quality rehabilitation
- lead by innovating and collaborating
- maintain an exceptional rehabilitation workforce.
Services
Services are free and provided for 10 weeks at home and in the community following discharge from hospital. The following rehabilitation therapies are available depending on the needs and goals of the client:
- occupational therapy
- physiotherapy
- exercise physiology
- speech pathology
- social work
- clinical psychology and neuropsychology
- Allied Health assistants
- specialist rehabilitation medical officers.
Program structure
Key elements of the 10-week program include:
- support for family, friends and other networks to develop ways to assist their loved ones and enhance their own health and wellbeing
- address health and wellbeing goals which can include exercise or getting back into other leisure activities
- returning to work and other meaningful roles
- supporting research to improve services for individuals with ABI and their networks
- online program delivery options.

Eligibility
Adults aged between 16 and 70 with ABI who receive rehabilitation at Princess Alexandra Hospital Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU) or Jasmine ABI Rehabilitation Unit may be eligible for ABI TRS when discharged home.
Eligible clients should:
- have identifiable and specific rehabilitation goals
- be able to take part in and benefit from a rehabilitation program
- be clinically stable
- be safe to discharge to a home and community environment (plus or minus support).
They may also need help from family or extended support networks at home.
Referring to ABI TRS
For residents located in the greater Brisbane area within a 50km radius of ABI TRS (about a 1-hour drive from the PA Hospital), rehabilitation is provided in their home and local area. Some clinic-based appointments may be needed for individual rehabilitation and group programs.
For residents outside the greater Brisbane area, temporary fully furnished accommodation is provided for the length of the rehabilitation program.
