With support in your final year as prosthetics and orthotics students, this scholarship is the first step on your exciting and rewarding career journey – with guaranteed employment after graduating.

Applications for the 2025 round of prosthetics and orthotics scholarships have closed. We will contact successful applicants in December 2024.

What’s on offer

Financial support

You receive a total of $21,000 financial support that we pay across the final year of study. This will begin at the start of your final academic year.

This support is taxable income.

We encourage you to get financial advice and to contact Centrelink to discuss any impact this may have on your finances.

A job with Queensland Health

Once you have your tertiary qualification, Queensland Health will provide paid employment as a health practitioner (HP3). The job will be at either the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH) or the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), Brisbane.

Return of service

After you graduate, you will need to work with Queensland Health for at least 18 months, as a return-of-service period.

During this time, you will receive support and mentoring from a world-class team, build a solid foundation for your career and have the opportunity to grow your skills.

Our hospitals

The RBWH and PAH are the 2 major tertiary hospitals in Queensland offering a wide range of service delivery modes of care across the state.

Both hospitals provide services in:

  • interim prosthetic rehabilitation of patients following amputation caused through disease or trauma.
  • prosthetic provision in both an inpatient and outpatient model.
  • participation in various multidisciplinary team environments, including amputees, high-risk foot and stroke.
  • varied orthotic caseload with close links to these teams:
    • orthopaedics
    • neurological
    • rehabilitation
    • plastics
    • brain injuries
    • spinal injuries.

Preparing to apply

Who can apply

You must be:

  • an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident
  • enrolled in the Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics at the University of the Sunshine Coast or La Trobe University
  • studying full time
  • commencing the last year of your degree with a plan to graduate that year.

What you need

You’ll need to have ready these supporting documents:

  • application form including your response to the selection criteria
  • your CV (curriculum vitae), that includes your employment history
  • details for 2 referees (one academic and one from current/previous employment or a personal referee)
  • a certified copy of photo ID (this can be a driver’s licence or passport)
  • proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency status.

Australian or New Zealand citizen

You will need a certified copy of your birth/citizenship certificate and marriage certificate, if applicable.

Australian permanent residents

You will need a certified copy of your permanent residency visa or letter granting you permanent residency status.

The scholarship will be administered in accordance with the Queensland Department of Health Scholarship Schemes Policy (PDF 137 kB).
