Solaria licence information

All people who possess and use a solarium in a commercial setting for cosmetic purposes must comply with the requirements of the Radiation Safety Act 1999 and the Radiation Safety Regulation 2010.

Use licence application kit

Any person who uses a solarium must hold an appropriate use licence. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Submit the completed application form, with verification of qualifications and experience to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Possession licence application kit

Any person who possesses a solarium must hold an appropriate possession licence, issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Develop a radiation safety and protection plan which details the radiation protection measures that will be conducted by your practice.

Step 3:

Submit the completed application form, with a signed and dated radiation safety and protection plan, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Tools to assist the possession licensee

Consent Form
The Radiation Safety Act 1999 requires the use licensee to obtain the written consent of the client to the irradiation. This consent must be on the approved client consent form

Skin type
An assessment of the skin photo type for each client must be carried out by the use licensee and the results recorded.  Skin photo type is a classification of skin type system using the Fitzpatrick scale. For more information: Fitzpatrick Skin Type - ARPANSA (PDF).

Warning notices
Warning notices, which comply with 3.6.1 of AS/NZS 2635:2008 Solaria for cosmetic purposes, must be displayed. Each sign needs to communicate signage information in legible print with a heading no smaller than 36pt Arial, and the body of text in no smaller than 32pt Arial, on A4 paper or larger. The notices must be displayed within immediate view of every client:
