Veterinary practices

This page provides advice on how to apply for licences to possess and use radiation apparatus for veterinary diagnostic radiography.

Use licence application kit

Any person who uses radiation apparatus for veterinary diagnostic radiography must hold an appropriate use licence. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Download and complete the application form:

Submit the completed application form, with verification of qualifications and experience as requested by the application form, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Possession licence application kit

Any person who possesses diagnostic radiation apparatus for veterinary radiography must hold an appropriate possession licence, issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Develop a radiation safety and protection plan which details the radiation protection measures that will be conducted by your practice.

For small animal plain film veterinary diagnostic radiography:

The following standard small animal plain film veterinary diagnostic radiography plan is available which may be adopted directly by your practice:

Use of the standard plan can result in significantly
faster consideration of a possession licence.

Step 3

Submit the completed application form, with a signed and dated radiation safety and protection plan, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Product Advisory Warning - X-ray equipment via internet

You are advised to exercise caution about purchasing X-ray equipment over the internet. While X-ray equipment for sale via the internet may appear to be cheaper than that offered by established Australian distributors, the X-ray equipment may not meet the relevant radiation safety standard, may be hazardous and may not be approved for use.
