The aim of the Infection Control Guidelines for Animal Contact (2008 PDF, 397kb) is to reduce the risk of infection and ill health to visitors of petting zoos, animal farms, wildlife exhibitors and similar enterprises in Queensland.
The guidelines recommend anticipating possible risks, conducting risk assessments and consistently following infection control measures, the most critical of these being proper hand washing after coming into contact with animals.
